How to write a Book – Part 2 Chunking

In Part 1 of How to Write a Book we talked about having a goal and the importance of well forming that goal so I am going to add the process to the end of this Blog.

If I were to ask you how you would eat an elephant you might think it a weird question but it is a useful way of introducing the idea of chunking. The answer is: “A mouthful at a time” but you knew that didn’t you?

Break down goals into smaller chunks. Start off by writing down the chapters. Don’t worry if you are not sure of some of them, they can be changed or adjusted later.

The important thing is to write something down and build a framework of the whole book and begin to fill in the detail. A bit like doing a crossword puzzle. You can use a tool to help you with this process. I use Mindmaps and some people use Spreadsheets. Whatever floats your boat and matches your learning style.

Motivation

What will it feel like for you having already finished the book and it is printed and you can see and feel the book in your hands.

Take this feeling with you as you put your book together and if you ever start to procrastinate then bring that image of your completed book to mind and get more of that good feeling.

In the province of the mind there are no limitations.

Well Formed Outcomes

Obstacles are what we notice when we take our eyes off our goals – Henry Ford

Positive   –  Make sure your goal is stated in the positive

Achievement   –   How would you know that you had achieved your goal?

  •    What do you see, hear and feel? – VAKOG
  •     How would someone else know that you had it?
  •     What would they VAKOG? {See, hear and feel}

C          Context                   When do you want it?

                                                 With whom? Where?

                                                When don’t you want it?

E          Ecology                      Positive by-products

  1. What would happen if you got it?
  2. If you get what you want would you lose anything?
  • Is it representative of who you are and where you want to be?

R           Resources                   Can you initiate and maintain getting the goal?

(A well-formed goal cannot be dependent on  what someone else does)
